Reading Your Production Numbers: What Fleet Uptime Actually Means

Most solar owners are handed a single number — "your system is at 99% uptime" — and left to assume it means everything is fine. It usually doesn't mean much at all. Uptime measures whether the inverter is reporting, not whether the array is producing what it was designed to produce. Those are very different questions, and only one of them shows up on your power bill.

Uptime versus performance

An inverter can be online and reporting all day while three shaded modules quietly drag a string 8% below its model. Uptime says 100%. Performance says you're leaving money on the roof. That gap is exactly where a monitoring desk earns its keep — and it's invisible unless someone is comparing measured production against the model, panel by panel, every day.

When SunWright commissions a system, we don't just record that it turned on. We capture the expected production curve for that specific array — its azimuth, its tilt, its local irradiance data, its shading profile — and store it as the reference. From then on, every day of real production is compared against that curve.

What modeled-versus-measured catches

The alerts that matter are the boring ones. A module whose output has drifted 6% below its neighbors over two months isn't a dramatic failure — it's a bad connector, or soiling, or early cell degradation. Left alone, it becomes a dead string a year later. Caught early, it's a fifteen-minute fix under warranty. Our O&M desk sees the drift long before it's large enough to notice on a monthly bill.

This is why we monitor at the module level rather than the inverter level. Inverter-level data tells you the array is alive. Module-level data tells you which panel to walk up to. For a 25-year performance warranty to mean anything, you have to be able to prove which module underperformed and when — and that requires the granular data from day one.

The number to ask for

Next time someone shows you an uptime figure, ask a different question: what is this array producing as a percentage of its model, this month, versus the same month last year? That single ratio tells you whether your investment is aging gracefully or quietly slipping. It's the number our annual performance report is built around, and it's the one we'd want if the roof were ours.

Production is the whole point. Everything else — the install, the warranty, the monitoring — exists to protect it. If your current provider can't answer the modeled-versus-measured question for your array, that's worth a conversation.
